General Curriculum
Penola High School provides a broad range of curriculum opportunities which incorporate both mainstream and flexible delivery models.
Year 8
Year 8 students are provided with a general curriculum covering each of the 8 learning areas:
- The Arts
- Design and Technology
- English
- Health and Physical Education
- Languages (Japanese)
- Mathematics
- Science
- Society and Environment
Year 9
Year 9 students are required to maintain a core curriculum which involves English, Mathematics, Science and Society and Environement. They are then able to make some choices in regard to specialist learning areas.
Year 10
Year 10 in 2009 will mark the beginning of studies in Future SACE. Students are encouraged to continue study of a core curriculum and specialist learning areas. Students embark upon their Personal Learning Plan and undertake a Vocational Education component which includes Work Experience. Greater flexibility is available to students with opportunities to begin Vocational education Training (VET) in Viticulture, Food and Hospitality or Information Technology. Other VET options are also available through negotiation.
Stage 1
Year 11 students are able to access mainstream and flexible curriculum options.
Australian School Based Apprenticeships (ASBA) can be brokered for individual students. This has previously included
ASBAs in Racing Industry, Tourism, Business along with a range of Manual Trades. Students are assisted through work experience and the course counselling process to choose Stage 1 subjects from a variety of learning areas that ensure students meet the literacy and numeracy requirements for achieving the South Australian Certificate of Education.
Stage 2
Year 12 students select a course of study
that meets their individual needs and supports their
chosen tertiary or vocational pathway. Students are
supported to achieve their SACE upon completion of
Year 12 or may choose to study at Stage 2 over a two
year period. Stage 2 subjects include face to face,
Local Delivery (via the Wattle Range Education
Network) and Open Access models. Students at Stage 2
may continue their study of VET or an ASBA. Students
undertaking Future SACE will complete an Extended
Learning Initiative (ELI) within one year of study
at Stage 2.
